There are some that make the claim that you’re only as good as the tools you bear. And quite frankly, there’s a lot of truth to that. For us, it’s a combination of industry knowledge and championing the art of problem solving in small spaces, as well as donning the tools to make the task at hand a success. Which is why we’re so happy to report that we’ve recently procured a IPG LaserCube from our friends at IPG.

The IPG LaserCube is perfect for our shop because of its compact size, taking up a relatively small footprint on our shop floor while enabling us to do some very robust, customized work. The machine is optimized for cutting small, technologically inspired parts using high-force linear motors built on a mobile granite stage.

For those of you that like some more “technical language,” let’s get into it: The IPG LaserCube unit has the “stability and acceleration needed for high-speed precision machining. Utilizing YLS fiber lasers up to 4 kW average power and IPG cutting head technology, the LaserCube handles metal sheets up to 48 × 48 inches (1250 x 1250 mm).” We chose this machine due in large part to the inclusion of high accuracy encoders in the motion platform enabling high precision work, making precise, clean cuts, while leaving clean edge condition for applications (which cuts down on post production buffing). This is especially important to MuShield due to the use of small, thin gauged foils – .004″ (.1016mm)-.125″ (3.175mm) thick– not a typical trait for other machines in a similar class.

The LaserCube is perfect for precision high-speed cutting of Mumetal flat patterns that we eventually fabricate into magnetic shields. Not only can the LaserCube cut Mumetal, but we also use it for a wide range of materials such as:

• Stainless Steel
• Aluminum
• Brass and Copper
• Carbon Steel
• Titanium
• Many other alloys

At MuShield we, along with our large, enterprise order, also field a lot of low quantity, custom jobs that we’re now able to more efficiently and affordably bring to fruition, making our lives easier, and the costs of our customers lower. A win-win. This machine is literally lowering the cost of doing business, which is great for all parties involved.

The IPG LaserCube is also able to seamlessly integrate new technology, which is great, so we can keep things up to speed without needed to replace the costly physical hardware.

In short, the machine is simple to use, it saves us time, it saves on production costs, and it allows as to better execute from myriad vantage points for our customers. We’re psyched to have this machine as part of the MuShield fleet/family.
